Introduction
TradeTech is a wholly New Zealand owned company and has operated since 1986 as a nationwide supplier of electronic components, production solutions, and electronic spare parts. TradeTech has set the industry standard for service and quality, and has won the industry service award for three consecutive years.
TradeTech’s business comprises three complementary divisions:
1. The Parts Division supplies components, parts, accessories, cables, connectors, power supplies and electronic finished products - primarily to the electronic repair technician who is TradeTech’s main customer. When the repair technician services a customer's TV or video, after establishing what is wrong, he orders a part from TradeTech. Staff take the order, pick the stock from the warehouse, and dispatch it to the customer, by same-day or overnight delivery. TradeTech provides logistic support and distributes parts for The Warehouse, LG, Sony and Philips.
2. The OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) Division sources, prices and supplies electronic components and production solutions to manufacturers. Companies such as Designline, Gallagher, Fisher and Paykel, Tait Electronics and hundreds of other manufacturers and exporters are OEM customers and are part of the vibrant New Zealand electronic manufacturing sector.
3. The Audio Video Division has grown along with incredible advances in A/V technology. TradeTech now supplies leads, cables, connectors, distribution systems, speakers and brackets to installers both large and small, wholesalers and the general public throughout New Zealand.
History of the Business
Grant Holmes, a grass roots technician from the North Shore who worked within the television and video repair industry, founded TradeTech in 1986. He saw the oportunity to support the service repair industry by providing a wide range of parts, delivered on time to anywhere in New Zealand.
In 1997, again to meet customer demand, TradeTech formed the OEM components division. While this division was to service an entirely different market from that of the trade technician, it enjoyed obvious synergy with the existing parts division, sharing the logistics of purchasing and distribution.
Ownership of the Business
In August 2001 the business was sold as a going concern to brothers Roger and Greg Fulton, who maintain a 50/50 partnership. Roger, with his background in consulting engineering and small-business ownership, bought a fresh approach to the management of the company. Greg immediately recognised the opportunity for TradeTech’s growth and also the operational synergy with his own appliance parts company, Prime Distributors Limited.
Leveraging the IT investment Greg had already made at Prime Distributors, the new owners connected the two companies using high-speed digital communications links. With the addition of a few low-cost terminals at TradeTech, the North Shore-based company had access to a sophisticated IT infrastructure including powerful servers and data backup systems.
The Rees 2000 software system was adopted principally because it supported all the tools of Internet communication and commerce. Now, TradeTech can e-mail newsletters to customers, give immediate advice about their orders, and connect directly with the customer technicians in their own workshop.
